aaaaand what's a tortoise shell? Essentially, it's bamboo that is still green, cured, and sealed to maintain the green color. It's then burnt with a flame (blow torch or similar item) to give the burnt patch look. The burnt patches are then sanded down and varnished to get a finished look. Oddly, this look is only common in North America and Europe. It's rarely used in the Far East. I suppose it gives that jungle look that most people are familiar with.
